Pune telecallers prey on 46-year-old doctor

PUNE: The Koregaon Park police have booked four men for duping a doctor to the tune of Rs14.50 lakh after threatening to register a case of money laundering against him.
The 46-year-old medical practitioner, a resident of Koregaon Park, has lodged the police complaint. The incident took place on April 1, this year.
The FIR states that the medical practitioner received a call from an unidentified person claiming his name and number had been selected for an expensive gift. The caller, Dr Chris Thomas, promised to send him the gift. In turn, he sought money for custom fees, transport fees, among others.
The doctor later received a call from another man called Rahul. The telecaller gave him some bank account numbers for a few money transfers. Following this, the complainant received yet another call from a 'vigilance officer', who threatened to file a case him.

The police said that the men claiming to be Dr Thomas and Rahul made several calls to the medical practitioner asking him to pay the bribe amount of Rs14.27 lakh to them. The panicked doctor transferred the money to the bank account numbers.
Eventually, the complainant realized that he had been duped by the suspects and he decided to approach the police. A case of extortion has also been filed since the suspects threatened to book him under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
