Water-logging witnessed across Mormugao taluka

Water-logging was witnessed in several parts of Vasco, Mormugao, Dabolim and Cortalim constituencies due to the incessant rain that lashed the entire Mormugao taluka throwing the normal life out of gear on Wednesday.

Water-logging was witnessed near El-Monte Theatre at Desterro, near Mormugao municipal building, near MPT Institute and police quarters, near RTO office building, near St Joseph’s Institute, Vasco, Chhotta Bazaar in Baina where several vehicles including four and two-wheelers were stranded.

People visiting government offices based in Mormugao municipal building had a hard time as the entrance was submerged under rain water.

The water level of nullah passing from Merces-Vaddem rose to dangerous level but due to the timely intervention of staff members attached to the Transport department, the blockades were cleared.

Fish vendors at Cortalim, who are waiting to be shifted into the new market complex at Cortalim, also faced the wrath of rains due to water-logging on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, there was also a report of landslide at Jetty-Sada on Wednesday but luckily no one was injured. The disaster management team has been intimated by the Vasco fire station about the landslide that occurred behind a bar at Jetty Sada.

Vasco fire station on Wednesday received several emergency calls including that of falling of trees at GSL Officers Club, Chicalim and St Jacinto Island, Chicalim.

Meanwhile, the Mormugao Municipal Council chief officer Gaurish Shankhwalkar on Wednesday informed that the municipal authorities have constituted teams of workers to respond to rains-related incidents like water-logging etc.

Reacting to the reports of water logging in the municipal jurisdiction on Wednesday, Shankhwalkar said, “I have asked the technical section to constitute teams of workers so that they can be dispatched wherever emergency takes place. These teams will be available round-the-clock. Despite of shortage of workforce, we have managed to allocate some workers to the Vasco fire station to handle emergency situations. I will speak to the director of municipal administration in order to provide additional workforce to tackle emergency situations in view of the monsoon.”
