VELLORE: A 50-year-old
farmer committed suicide using a country-made gun following a tiff with his
wife at Mel Arasampattu in Vellore district of
Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
Police said Jayashankar was living with his wife Chitra, 40, and their three children. After he incurred huge losses from agriculture some time ago, his two sons migrated to Bengaluru as construction workers.
Jayashankar had to sell his 50-cent land borrow money for his daughter’s marriage fixed six years ago.
A few weeks ago, an argument broke out between Jayashankar and his wife after he decided to sell his 25-cent land to settle loans. The couple had been quarrelling over the issue for some time.
On Wednesday morning, the couple quarrelled over the matter again and an irate Jayashankar went out of his house. Later, he committed suicide using his country-made gun on his farmland. Hearing the gunshot, villagers went to the spot and to found Jayashankar lying in a pool of blood.
Saravanan, inspector of the Veppankuppam police station, said some farmers in the hilly areas of
Ambur possessed country-made guns to ward off wild animals.
Police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC (suspicious death) and launched an investigation. They sent the body to Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
