A nurse who was stabbed in the neck has spoken for the first time about her ordeal, saying she goes to work to help people - not to get attacked.

Tina, 37, was outside Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide during her break at 6.30pm Monday when she was approached by a stranger who asked her for a cigarette.

The man then stabbed the nurse in the neck with a sharp object before fleeing the scene.

Tina underwent surgery for the stab wound and remains in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Speaking from her hospital bed after surgery, Tina told Nine News she fell to the ground as her attacker ran off.

However, she managed to get up, hold her bleeding neck, and walk back inside. 

'I was on the floor bleeding,' Tina said.  

'I was there to help people, not getting stabbed just like 20 metres away from the hospital.'

A 28-year-old homeless man was arrested on Tuesday and expected to appear in Murray Bridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He was charged with aggravated intentionally causing harm and aggravated endanger life. 

A South Australia Health spokesperson confirmed the nurse was being 'well-cared for' by her colleagues.

Health Minister Stephen Wade said he planned to hold an urgent briefing about the attack with the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network.

'Our hardworking staff do an amazing job and should be able to come and go from their workplace safely,' Mr Wade said, according to The Advertiser.

'Our number one priority is to provide a safe working environment for our staff and patients.'

Opposition health spokesman Chris Picton said 'everything' must be done to ensure the safety of hospital workers. 

Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation state secretary Elizabeth Dabars said concerns had been raised in regards to 'hospital security' and 'patient aggression'.
