Ludhiana: With the state’s first ever one-day ‘Rozgar mela’ meant for the students belonging to the vocational stream, around 66.7% students took their offer letters on Tuesday. Around 860 students had registered themselves of which 574 students were offered letters. More than 50 students received the highest offer of Rs 15,000 per month and hundreds were offered Rs 13,000, Rs 7,000 per month.
As many as 60 companies from different sectors participated in the mela. Firms, including Shingora textiles, Vallabh fabrics, LIC, Vishal Mega Mart, ICICI, Rockman and Vardhman hired candidates.
With the theme ‘Hunar hai toh rozgar hai’, the mela was organized at Government Model Senior Secondary Smart School on the Punjab Agricultural University campus, by the district education department.
Students of Class XII falling under the state vocational scheme and the national skill qualification framework participated in the mela.
There are around 780 schools in the state providing over 11 courses in agriculture, automobile, beauty and wellness, healthcare, IT, physical education, retail, security and travel and tourism.
On the other hand, 544 government schools in the state provide 29 courses in computer science, electronic, general reception, textile weaving, marketing, banking, banking and financial service, garment marketing, food preservation, informative management, electronics, horticulture, mechanical, accounting and auditing, agriculture, automobile engineering, insurance, import and export management, knitting, office management, purchases and store keeping, secretarial practice, textile designing, textile and craft, travel and tourism, architecture, sewing machine operators, cooperative management and manufacturing of leather goods.
Around 860 students from four districts of Punjab, including Hoshiarpur, Ferozpur and Moga, participated in the fair. Of these, 330 students from Ludhiana, 123 from Hoshiarpur, 23 from Moga and 67 from Ferozepur were present in the fair.
Subhash Mahajan, deputy state project director, Punjab, said: “This initiative will be taken place every year. This year, there are 7,579 students above 18 years of age across the state. Therefore, we chose six districts as cluster heads for them. We have planned to organize the fair in Patiala, Bhatinda, Mohali and Jalandhar. Students can share their profile with companies and get jobs. We have already planned the next
Rozgar Mela on December 26 for the students pursuing Class XII.”
Swaranjit Kaur, district education officer (secondary), said: “After vacations teachers too will be given training so that they can teach interview skills to the students. I appreciate that students in large numbers came during the vacation to grab the opportunity. Those left will be connected with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Ludhiana chapter.

Prabhal Purui from GSSS Payal, said: “The interview has boosted my confidence as I appeared for five companies and got selected in one. They have offered to pay me Rs 8,000. I used to do a part-time job for 5 hours for Rs 5,000 during my school days and now I am planning to shift for full time. I have loans to repay. Infact, my brother is a part-time worker and he is in Class XII.”
