Distress calls leave fire dept personnel on toes

Even as the season›s first heavy rains lashed the state on Wednesday catching many people unawares, the fire department had a tough time attending to the flood of calls seeking intervention in cases such as of trees uprooting and snapping of power lines.

The department in the last 24 hours attended to 13 emergency calls with maximum calls coming from residents of Panaji which included cases of wall collapse, possible electrocution, uprooting of trees on houses and roads.

Fire department responded to five emergency calls in the capital city including of a tree falling on compound wall of TB Cunha school at Campal, a mango tree falling on the road near Auxilium school at Caranzalem, electrical wire snapping and coming down on the road at Bambolim slope, tree fallen on building and compound wall near Mahalaxmi temple and fruit tree fallen on the house near TB Hospital at Chicholim. The fire department attended to two distress calls in Ponda of tree fallen on the house near Purvashay temple at Maluwada, Gaune and on the road near Mahalaxmi temple at Talaulim.

The fire rescue team of Vasco fire station removed a tree fallen on the road at Sada. A cat was rescued by Pilerne fire force from a gutter near La Calypso hotel at Baga. Another call attended by Pernem fire station was on banyan tree fallen on the electrical wire and road near fort at Terekhol.

In Mapusa, fire department officials removed a cashew tree that had fallen on a house near Siddeshwar temple at Gadnewado, Paliem and similar call was attended at Sankhali of a mango tree falling on the house at Gautanwada.
