State to form company for Champions Boat League

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has decided to form a new company to run the ambitious ‘Champions Boat League’ (CBL), the IPL (Indian Premier League)-model annual event proposed to give a fresh leap to Kerala’s famed boat races.
Though the company is envisaged as a public-sector undertaking (PSU), various boat race clubs in the state will get a share of the profits generated by this first-of-its-kind mega water sport event in the country. The decision was announced at the meeting of the state-level organizing committee for the CBL held on Monday, which was attended by finance minister T M Thomas Isaac and tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran.
The company will have to generate income by selling telecast rights and auctioning of franchisees for the conduct of each leg of the CBL, besides generating advertisement and sponsorship revenues, said a tourism official. “It’s going to be a big budget event. The estimated budget for the launch edition of the event is Rs 40 crore,” the official pointed out.
The meeting finalized the venues and dates of the CBL to be conducted at 12 different venues. The event will kickstart on August 10 with the prestigious Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha and will end with President’s Trophy Boat Race in Kollam on November 1.

Proposed as a televised product of the tourism sector, the races will be accompanied by cultural programmes, the official said. “The aim is to create a new tourism season by replacing the ‘lean season’ and lure both international and domestic tourists,” the official added.
The government proposal is being presented before boat clubs, rowers and boat owners, who are the main stakeholders.
