THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: City police, on Tuesday, conducted simultaneous raids in various city schools and found pornographic content in the phones of 50 drivers and cleaners of
private vans that are usually hired by parents to drop their wards.
Police also booked two drivers who turned up for duty under the influence of alcohol. They also found that many of them were using tobacco products such as Pan Parag during trips.
Simultaneous raids were launched outside 38 schools in city and over 400 vehicles and their drivers/cleaners were checked. Commissioner Dinendra Kashyap said that the drive was launched after a few parents contacted him and raised a concern that drivers and cleaners of ‘parallel’ service vans were showing pornographic clips to students in their vehicles.
“We did not catch any of them in the act (showing
porn clips to students) and hence we have not registered a case in that regard,” he said. Those held with pornographic content in their phones were let off with a warning. Police would be conducting random checks in the coming weeks too so that it would have a deterrent effect on anyone leading students astray with
porn clips or other narcotic substances.
The raids were conducted between 2pm and 3pm, before classes dispersed. Policemen, including officers from local stations in mufti and members of shadow police squad rounded up the drivers and cleaners of private school vans/taxis and rickshaws and checked them while they were waiting to pick up students.
“We did not want our raid to cause trouble for students and delay their trips. We chose the hour just before the classes dispersed,” said special branch ACP A Pramod, who led the raids.
The two cases for drunken driving were registered at Cantonment and Poojappura police stations.
