AHMEDABAD: At least 27 dilapidated structures that were either abandoned by their owners or vacated, along the route of the Lord Jaganath Rath yatra, in the AMC Central Zone in the walled city, were pulled down on Wednesday. The maximum number of buildings, 16, that were marked as structurally unsafe were pulled in the Dariapur area. Eleven buildings were razed in Khadia. This is by far the largest demolition drive against unsafe buildings in the walled city in the last five years.
Three years ago, some 700 notices had been served to owners of unsafe buildings in the walled city. Since then, some 150 more buildings have been added to the list. A senior AMC official told TOI that on list of 'unsafe' buildings, nearly 20% are buildings that are on the heritage list.
