GURUGRAM: Two men carrying animal meat in a truck were chased and thrashed by a mob in Gurugram's Bhawani Enclave early on Tuesday.
Police said four men got off the truck and ran when they spotted a group of vigilantes (gau rakshaks) who had stationed themselves on the road to intercept the truck. The vigilantes had received a tip-off from their network - a group of around 150 "gau rakshaks" operating in Gurugram, Mewat, Palwal, Rewari and Faridabad. A group of villagers had also gathered there. The vigilantes chased down and caught two of the men, identified as Sayal Ahmad and Taied.
Accusing them of being cow smugglers, the group beat up the two men, police said. Sayal is from Palwal and Taied from Mewat.
The meat, which the vigilantes claim was beef, was seized. The two men were admitted to Civil Hospital, and their condition is said to be stable. A case has been registered against them at Sadar police station on a complaint filed by the vigilantes, police said.
Two booked under cow protection Act
Savita Kataria, who runs a cow shelter in Bhawani Enclave in Sector 9A, said she received a tip-off that two trucks carrying animal meat were heading towards Delhi from Mewat around 5.30am. “We immediately reached Islampur village and waited for the trucks. Around 6am, we spotted two vehicles coming from the Mewat side. When we stopped them, four people stepped out and tried to flee,” said Kataria.

“The mob started beating them. A police team arrived at the spot after I called up the control room. With the help of police, we dispersed the crowd and handed over the duo to police,” added Kataria. It was she who filed the complaint.
Police said the control room received a call around 6.40am, and the caller informed them that vigilantes had caught two people with vehicles carrying meat. “On the basis of the complaint, a case has been registered under the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015 against them,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
