Vadodara: The Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) has selected M S University for establishing supercomputer facility. The decision has spread a wave of joy at the campus which will be amongst few institutes to house such a facility in-house.
The facility will be set up at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Faculty of Technology and Engineering.
“The supercomputer facility will help students and academic researchers for conducting high-end in-house advance computing studies and research work,” said MSU vice-chancellor professor Parimal Vyas.
“GUJCOST supercomputer facility aims to provide capacity building among students and faculties with advanced technologies to perform high-end computations for scientific, engineering and academic programs to address and catalyze the research using modelling, simulation and data analysis,” a communicaton that MSU has received from GUJCOST, states.
“The facility will also help in promoting research by integrating leading-edge emerging technologies at the gross root level,” the letter mentions, adding that the facility will be set up as per GUJCOST guidelines and terms and conditions.
“Big data, machine learning, algorithms, internet of things are the future when it comes to the field of computer science. This facility is a must if we want to advance ourselves in the field. It will add a new dimension,” said Dr Apurva Shah, head of the Department of Computer Science and Technology.
“If we want to work on some algorithms, it takes months for a normal computer to process. In contrast, supercomputers can give us results within hours,” he said.

The facility is expected to come up within a month. “This facility will help us provide exposure to our BE and MCA students. At the same time, we will be providing facility to all technical students of the area,” he said.
Interestingly, Dr Vijay Bhatkar, who is considered to be father of India’s first supercomputer – PARAM – is also an alumni of MSU. Setting up such a facility costs anywhere in the range of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore.
