An awareness rally was taken out here by more than 2,000 school and college students on Wednesday against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed on June 26 every year following a resolution passed in 1987 by the United Nations Organisation (UNO) .
District Collector, S.A. Raman flagged off the rally at Voorhees School in Vellore. He distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted earlier on awarenss of drug abuse and trafficking.The rally passed through Anna Salai and Town Hall Road to culminate at Gandhi Square at the entrance of Vellore Fort.

Students from EVR Girls Higher Secondary School, Venkateswara HSS, Holy Cross HSS, St. Mary’s HSS, Muslim HSS, Bharat Matriculation School, Voorhees School and Voorhees College took out the rally carrying placards with messages urging the public to adhere to the principles advocated by eminent scholars and leaders of yesteryears. Messages about the disastrous effect of drugs on individual and society’s health and economy were created.
Placards against illicit trafficking and appeals on protecting children, particularly girls, were on display.Vellore Superintendent of Police, Pravesh Kumar, additional SP-Excise, Rajendran, DSP-Vellore, Balakrishnan, district revenue officer, J. Partheeban, deputy director health services, KST Suresh, Indian Red Cross Society-Vellore, secretary, C. Indernath and chief educational officer, S. Mars participated in the rally.
