SA's Scott claimed by Baltimore Orioles

2019-06-26 10:47

Cape Town - South Africa's Tayler Scott has been snapped up by the Baltimore Orioles after the Seattle Mariners placed him on a waiver.

Scott made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut earlier this month for the Mariners and became the second South African - and first pitcher - to play in the Majors.

The 27-year-old has only appeared in five games for the Mariners, including two starts as an opener.

In 7 2/3 innings, Scott allowed eight earned runs with six walks and seven strikeouts.

According to MLB website, the Mariners have optioned him to the Triple-A Tacoma through the waivers (player to be traded).

However, the Orioles confirmed on Twitter that they have instead optioned Scott to their minor league team, called Triple-A Nortfolk.

Earlier this month, Scott became the second South African to make his MLB debut after Gift Ngoepe.

In 2017, Ngoepe became the first South African to play an MLB game when he featured in 41 games for the Pirates, before being traded to the Blue Jays in the 2017/18 season. He is currently playing in the minor leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies.
