ATTINGAL: On Tuesday,
Attingal police recorded the arrest of Hussain Oraon alias Amal (33), a
migrant labourer from West Bengal who was wanted in connection with the
murder of another
migrant worker in Poovanpara. Police arrested the son of West Bengal native Bachha Oraon after a search that lasted three months. Police said Amal hails from Falakata village, Alipurduar in Jalpaiguri district.
The accused was arrested from the Makrapara,
Jaigaon (India – Bhutan border) in West Bengal where he was working as a plantation worker in a tea garden. He was brought to the state capital on Tuesday evening and will be presented in court on Wednesday. Police have filed a case under IPC section 302. The alleged murder took place at the office building of AM Hollow Bricks Interlocks and Material Supply near Poovanpara, where the duo worked and stayed.
According to police they had a tiff over money on March 10, 2019. Amal then stabbed his colleague Bimal Bara (39)– a native of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal – in the neck using a sharp-edged weapon. He also stole victim’s mobile phone and money and even tried to burn the body. Soon after the incident, Amal went into hiding.
Since the owner and other employees had no information about them as they had failed to collect identity cards, initially police were also clueless. A special team, under the rural SP, launched a probe and visited previous places in Kerala, Kolkata and West Bengal where Amal had worked. Though police recovered Bara’s mobile phone from a Durgapar native, officers failed to find the accused. Amal had sold the phone to him.
Two weeks ago, Attingal police issued a look out notice against Amal and revisited West Bengal. They stayed there and donned the role of a recruitment agency that hires migrant workers. The officers also took help from migrant labourers who were settled in Kerala. “The officers also approached Amal’s relatives as recruiting officers and offered a good job in Kerala to obtain more details. After a detailed enquiry, we found that he had shifted to Makrapara as a plantation worker with a relative. To avoid arrest, he was not using a mobile phone and had changed his looks,” said Attingal ASI Shafi.
