Heavy rain throws life out of gear in Goa

The state witnessed a spell of heavy rainfall on Wednesday throwing life out of gear and causing severe damage to property.

The weather department has issued ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ alert for the next three days and advised people to stay indoors till Saturday owing to cyclonic circulation that is persisting over east central Arabian Sea and adjoining South Maharashtra.

The updated weather bulletin says heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at a few places over the state till June 28. Heavy rainfall at a few places with very heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to occur at isolated places over North Goa and South Goa on June 29. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over North Goa and South Goa on June 30.

Several parts of the state received very heavy rainfall and the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Panaji. So far, the capital city has received an average of 444.2 mm rainfall since June 1 and 111.2 mm rainfall was recorded since Wednesday morning till 8.30 pm.   In the city, the low-lying areas were filled with rainwater, trees got uprooted in many areas and the drains overflowed.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) station-wise rainfall gauge station, Dabolim received the second highest rainfall of 71.5 mm in the past 24 hours followed by Old Goa 68.2 mm, Mormugao 57.4 mm, Quepem 56.6 mm, Margao 53.2 mm and Mapusa 14.3 mm. The lowest rainfall of 10.8 mm was recorded in Pernem.
