NASHIK: With June coming to an end and negligible rainfall in Nashik, the water stock of the Deolali Cantonment Board (DCB) has hit rock bottom and would last only four days.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DCB Ajay Kumar said that they have made a separate barrage on the Darna river. "Since monsoon has got delayed in Nashik for nearly a month, there is no water in Darna river. Further, the water supply into Darna from Gangapur Dam has also been affected due to the delay in monsoon. If the situation persists, the barrage will be dry within the next four days," he said.
The DCB is responsible for ensuring water supply to a population of around 60,000 people in its jurisdiction. Apart from DCB, the MES also lifts water from the same barrage for supply to military area.
The official said they would talk with the MES official about the problem so that lesser water is lifted from the barrage and the stock continues for a few more days.
"If the situation demands, water will be drawn from wells and supplied to different areas of the cantonment board through tankers," Kumar said.
Over the past few years, population of Deolali Camp has increased rapidly which has added to the pressure of meeting the water demand. A large number of people in Deolali Camp also depend on the private bore-wells they have constructed for themselves.

Taking into account the problem of water supply in Deolali Camp, a few years ago the barrage was constructed over Darna river that could hold water that could last for at least a month. However, this year, owing to delayed monsoon in Nashik the situation has become bad.
The main source of water for Deolali Camp cantonment area is Darna river spread across eight wards and the daily consumption is around 70 lakh liters.
