Just when you think that you are done with the whole nine-month pregnancy (here's looking at you stretch marks and morning sickness!), the first year awaits. No matter how many books you read, classes you attend and the tips you receive, nothing in the world can prepare you for the same. Every parent has a different story to share.
The first year is a big learning experience filled with a lot of new changes, both good and bad! There are the first time diaper changes you wish you had done differently or night time feeding schedules. Bringing up a baby is anything but easy. But it is also filled with some hilarious moments you look back upon. You also realise that parenthood is nothing like what you have watched on movies or read about in books.
Something similar happened with Michelle Lin, who was shocked to see how different parenting is from the expectations. When she first gave birth, she had no idea how overwhelming it could get. Breastfeeding was one experience that shocked her the most.
What she also found different was how bringing up babies is nothing like how they tell you in classes.
“Something else I did not expect was how much babies ― at least mine ― move around when you’re changing their diapers! We had practised changing diapers on dolls in our parenting class, and definitely weren’t prepared for wriggly newborns or, later on, babies who would stand up mid-diaper change and try to walk around on the dresser!”
But she decided to do something different—took her own example and created comics for other parents to relate to. She started her Instagram page by the name of 'Milk Rice Comics', which deals with the topsy-turvy ride that parenthood is!
A mother-of-two, Lin, sketched out her parenting fails and laughter filled moments in a comic series for other parents struggling in the same boat. Her comics are very real and will make you chuckle!
In the end, she has only one message to give out—parents aren't alone in their struggles!
"To those parents struggling with breastfeeding, potty training, stubborn toddlers and other issues, I hope that the comics provide them with some sort of relief in allowing them to laugh about our shared struggles and in knowing that they are not alone in this!”
