Man dies of rabies in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: A 35-year-old labourer from Odisha died of rabies while undergoing treatment in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Sonu living in Edayarpalayam and working for a private concern
Sonu’s family and friends said he had been bitten by a rabid dog in his hometown around nine months ago. However, he had not taken any care or injections for the same, they said.
On Sunday, he began having symptoms like fever and hydrophobia.

GH authorities said the man was admitted to hospital in a critical condition on Sunday.
“Our investigations showed that he was suffering from fever, had itching and was becoming hydrophobic. The infection has been dormant for months. It was growing slowly,” said hospital resident medical officer Dr A Soundaravel. “The symptoms looked like those of rabies,” he said.
