A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing a 7-year-old girl in Narela on June 14, the police said on Monday.
The victim is suspected to have been sexually assaulted before the murder, they said, adding that they are awaiting the post-mortem report.
DCP (Outer North) Gaurav Sharma said the accused is a labourer. and lives near the victim’s house.
The girl’s mother said her daughter had gone to play on June 14 when she went missing. On June 15 morning, the victim’s grandmother approached the police and a kidnapping case was registered. The next day, the girl was found murdered.
Her grandmother said, “I used to treat him [accused] like my son. He and my son used to stay together but 7-8 years ago, they parted ways after a fight. My granddaughter used to call him mama [uncle],” she said.
Mr. Sharma said the accused was intoxicated at the time of the incident. “The girl’s father was having an illicit relationship with the accused’s sister,” the officer said.
However, both the families denied the claim.
“We have been married for seven years. The accused’s sister is also married. My husband rarely stays here. He works and stays in Shahdara mostly. This cannot be true,” said the victim’s mother.
