Bikers held after sergeant assault on CIT Road

Assaulted sergeant Year Mahammad Biswas
KOLKATA: A traffic sergeant — attached with the Park Circus traffic guard — was assaulted by two bikers on CIT Road when he tried to stop them for not wearing helmets. The incident took place around 5.30pm on Sunday. The police arrested both the accused, Kartik Prasad Roy and the pillion rider Sebastian John Gomes.
The assaulted sergeant, Year Mahammad Biswas, was carrying out his duty on CIT Road when he noticed the duo riding a bike without wearing helmets.
“The bike was being driven in rash and negligent manner as the bikers overtook and sped on the wrong lanes, endangering the safety of others. Besides, they were not wearing helmets. Biswas intercepted the motorcycle in front of Premier Motor Training School at the Hati Bagan Road-CIT Road crossing near the post office. The two bikers questioned the sergeant’s motive. They started arguing with the sergeant and within minutes, assaulted him in order to deter him from discharging his duty,” the FIR stated.
“I had seen the two men passing lewd comments and punching on the windows of passing cars. They were reckless and riding the bike that had no numberplate. I chased them from Don Bosco traffic signal and blocked their path near the post office. The pillion rider punched me. I managed to nab him but the rider had managed to flee at that time,” said Biswas.
Police sources said that Biswas was treated and discharged from CNMC Hospital later on Sunday night. During a subsequent investigation by the Beniapukur police, Roy and Gomes were arrested within hours of the incident and the motorcycle was also impounded.

The case was registered under IPC section 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed).“We will file a quick chargesheet and cite this as an example. The fact that a cop was attacked for carrying out a drive to rid the city of rogue bikers makes this case important for us,” said an investigating officer.
Altercations between rule-breakers and traffic personnel have been on the rise in the city.
