Woman shot at by daughter-in-law’s father, FIR lodged

KANPUR: A 62-year-old woman was shot at and critically injured in Kanpur Dehat district on Sunday after her son married a girl whose parents were against the relationship.
The woman’s family has lodged an FIR and accused the girl’s father and his brother behind the attack. The woman, who suffered gun shot in her head, is battling for life at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital in the city.
Police said Sumitra Devi was attending household chores when her daughter-in-law Shivani’s father Manoj barged in with his brother Kallu and opened fire at her, hitting her in the head. The incident took place in Kanchausi town under Mangalpur Kotwali police jurisdiction of Kanpur Dehat district. The accused fled after the incident. The woman was taken to the local CHC from where she was referred to LLR hospital in Kanpur.
The woman’s son Adarsh Singh was in a relationship with Shivani whom he married in a Kanpur court in January this year. Manoj was against it and had threatened the Adarsh of dire consequences. On Sunday, Manoj shot at his mother, police added.

Inspector Mangalpur Kotwali Tulsiram Pandey said, “The victim’s son had married a girl who resides in their neighbourhood against her parents’ wishes. Earlier too, the accused had allegedly threatened the boy with dire consequences. On Sunday evening, he and his brother, fired a shot at Adarsh’s mother Sumitra Devi.”
“We have booked the accused under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and section 25 of the Arms Act,” the inspector said.
