Mumbai: Teen enters moving train to rob woman commuter, held

MUMBAI: A 15-year-old boy was detained after he entered a moving train to steal a woman commuter's handbag at Cotton Green station in Mumbai on Tuesday. Police said the woman followed him out of the running train at great risk to her life. Patrolling GRP personnel came to her aid and chased the teen. He has been sent to an observation home.
The complainant, Meena Kadam, 54, is a nurse at the Cama Hospital in CST. After work, she boarded a harbour local to travel to her Wadala residence. She was seated in the ladies compartment. Around 4.45pm, the local entered Cotton Green station when the teen jumped into the ladies coach. He picked up the handbag on Kadam's lap and jumped off. Kadam was carrying Rs 6,000 in cash in the handbag.

"She impulsively jumped out of the moving train after the teen and raised an alarm. Three patrolling personnel on the platform heard her shout 'thief.' The trio-- assistant inspector PB Desai, constable Nilesh Bokefode and constable Ganesh Jagdale-- chased the teen and caught him. The handbag with the cash was recovered from him," said GRP senior inspector Rajendra Pal.
The teen lives in a slum in Sewri. Police officials said he is hooked to drugs. "Kadam was lucky to not have suffered any injuries," said a police officer.
