Labourer from Odisha dies of rabies in city

Coimbatore: A 35-year-old labourer from Odisha, who was bitten by a rabid dog in his hometown, died of rabies at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday.
CMCH authorities said that the victim, Sonu, was staying in Edayarpalayam and working for a private firm. “He had got admitted in a critical condition on Sunday. Investigations showed that he was suffering from fever, had itching and was hydrophobic. The infection was dormant for months and slowly flared up,” resident medical officer Dr A Soundaravel said. “The symptoms looked like rabies.”

Sonu’s family said that though he was bitten by a rabid dog nine months ago in his hometown, he did not seek medical attention.
Seven deaths due to rabies were reported from the district last year. TNN
