A grant of ₹10,000 crore has been sought from the 15th Finance Commission for various infrastructure projects. On Monday, a presentation on the existing infrastructure in the city and development projects in the pipeline was made before a delegation from the commission.

In a letter to Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman, Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun justified the demand for the grants, stating that Bengaluru’s population has risen substantially. Though various development works have been taken up to accommodate the growth and demand for infrastructure, many projects need to be implemented on a large scale in all sectors, she said.

Ms. Mallikarjun said that 13,000 km of road network needs to continuously maintained, 400 km of the 842-km storm-water drain network needs to be remodelled, and 50 out of the 167 lakes need to be rejuvenated. She also said that 250 of the city’s 1,339 parks have been proposed to be converted into tree parks, while 180 burial grounds need to be improved.

Ms. Mallikarjun also sought special consideration for waste water treatment and reuse systems.
