Coimbatore: Pothole-riddled Bharathi Park Road and Alagesan Road would soon get a makeover. The city municipal corporation has taken up relaying of the roads at a cost of Rs 1.83crore.
The two parallel roads are the most used in the region. Bharathi Park Road, which connects Thadagam Road and Mettupalayam Road, sees heavy traffic and also morning and evening walkers.
Alagesan Road, which too connects Thadagam Road and Mettupalayam Road, has schools and residential areas in and around it.
Bharathi Park Road, in particular had been punctuated with pits and potholes. Commuters travelling on two wheelers behind cars or bigger vehicles would not be able to see the potholes until they go very near to them, forcing them to take a sudden detour or hit the brake suddenly, both of which could cause mishap.
A corporation official overseeing the work said they had inaugurated the road relaying project last Friday. “We have started the work on Alagesan Road now. We have been removing the mud from the sides of the road. After that, we would relay the road. It would take a month to finish the work. After that, we would take up the work on Bharathi Park Road, which would take another month,” he told TOI.
When TOI visited Alagesan Road on Monday, earthmovers and workers were seen removing mud and stones on the sides of the road. The official said the around 1m to 1.5m of the sides of the road would be left free as there were transformers and trees there.
The official said they would fill potholes with wet mix and then lay tar over it. “We would cover the road with blue metal and then finish off with a layer of bituminous concrete,” he added.
