The Supreme Court on Monday declined to stay the Devendra Fadnavis government’s decision to grant the Maratha community reservation in admission for Post Graduate courses in medical and dental colleges for academic year 2019-20 in the state.
The Fadnavis government had last year accepted the State Backward Class Commission’s report and decided to give quota in jobs and educational institutes to the Maratha community.
A vacation bench, headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, dismissed the petition filed by one individual, Sameer, who had challenged the Bombay High Court order which had refused to stay the state government’s order on reservation.
Late last year, the Devendra Fadnavis dispensation had granted the Maratha community reservation in admission for Post Graduate courses in medical and dental colleges for academic year 2019-20 in the state.
Sameer had moved the Bombay High Court and then Supreme Court, but did not get any relief.
“We don’t find any merit in the petition filed by Sameer. The petition is devoid of merit and the same is accordingly dismissed. No relief to the petitioner in the case,” the bench ruled.
Nishant Khatneswarkar appeared from Maharashtra side and Sameer’s case was presented by advocate Dinesh Pratap Singh.
