FALL RIVER -- Police allege a 15-year-old boy who ran from officers investigating a large fight on Mott Street Sunday night was carrying a loaded handgun when he was arrested after a  pursuit.

Criminal charges were issued against the teenager in juvenile court for allegedly carrying a firearm without a license, possessing ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card and carrying a loaded firearm in public, according to police spokesman Sgt. J.T. Hoar.

Police were called to the area of Mott and Grinnell streets just after 8 p.m. for a report of a group of 15 to 20 people fighting in the street, he said.

Members of the Fall River Police Gang Unit patrolling the area saw the teenager wearing black clothing running about two blocks away on Oxford Street, Hoar said.

When Gang Unit officers caught up with the teenager, he allegedly told officers to leave him alone and refused to remove his hands from his pockets before fleeing again on foot, according to Hoar

The teen appeared to be holding something on the left side of his body as he ran, said Hoar.

Officers took the teenager into custody a few blocks away near the corner of Warren and Congress streets, said Hoar.

Police allegedly found a “loaded, cocked, ready to use” .380 Walther PP handgun in the teenager’s left pocket, according to Hoar.

No one else was arrested in connection with the fight, which Hoar said was breaking up when uniformed officers arrived at the scene.
