Coimbatore: Five days after he lodged a complaint claiming that two miscreants snatched a bag containing $43,000 from him, the rural police have decided to arrest U Rhitheesh of Vaigai Avenue on Kalangal Road in Sulur.
Rhitheesh, an employee of a money exchange firm at Saibaba Colony, had told police that two motorcycle-borne men had attacked him using weapons before snatching the money when he parked his motorcycle near an ATM centre to attend a call last Wednesday night. He was admitted in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Sulur.
Based on his complaint, police registered a case and formed a team to nab the miscreants.
But when police officers interrogated him later, Rhitheesh gave contradictory statements. Police also collected CCTV footage from the ‘crime’ scene.
A detailed investigation revealed that the complainant had handed over the US currency to his brother-in-law Vivek, who was working in a private firm at Eachanari and had staged a drama with his help.
“Rhitheesh had borrowed lakhs of rupees from finance firms and was not in a position to repay the amount. He was planning to use the money for that purpose,” a police officer told TOI. “We plan to alter the case against Rhitheesh and his brother in-law on Tuesday. Both of them will be arrested and will be send to jail for staging a drama.”
