‘Colour My City’ gives Hubballi vibrant look

HUBBALLI: During the recent Lok Sabha elections, with the aim of keeping public spaces clean while also sending out a message to people, a team of youngsters painted a filthy wall in Hosur, Hubballi with motifs on the need to exercise one’s franchise. It wasn’t the only wall which got a clean, fresh look. The team has cleaned walls near Ashoknagar railway under bridge, on Club Road at Sarvodaya Circle and at Gokul Road, besides other places.
‘Colour My City’, a volunteer organization formed three years ago by architect Kiran Uppar, has nearly 25 members today. They come from diverse backgrounds — from engineers to doctors to artistes. The team targets road-side walls defaced by political posters, pamphlets, graffiti and advertisements.

Since there is no support from any government agency, team members pool in money and equipment necessary for cleaning up a spot.
Kiran said walls are first cleaned and then painted with a particular theme in mind. “We have even spruced up buildings in government schools which were neglected by authorities,” Kiran said. He went on to say, “We painted buildings in a government school in Keshwapur area and Vigneshwar school in Vidyanagar. Next week, the team will paint a government school in Shetewad village.”
