Sree Chitra institute starts sourcing animal tissue from MPI

Thiruvananthapuram: Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has started collection of animal tissue for medical use from the GMP tissue harvesting facility for medical devices at Meat Products of India (MPI) in Koothattukulam.
MPI will be supplying animal tissue for the medical device unit of SCTIMST for manufacturing animal tissue-based devices such as cardiac patches, wound care patches and tissue heart valves.
The animal tissue is collected in compliance with international standards (ISO 22442 Part 2) which deals with medical devices utilizing animal tissue and their derivatives. This ensures checking the source of animal tissue, its health status as well as the microbial status of the tissue, said a statement issued by SCTIMST.
All these processes are well documented for aiding future technical auditing.
SCTIMST had developed the know-how for processing animal tissue for medical use complying with international standards.

Although the country is a major exporter of meat, till date there was no established source for quality animal tissue in the country. Through this venture, MPI will be supported by SCTIMST to attain this unique status, thereby aiding in the development of affordable medical devices in the country. For this the staff of MPI were specially trained to collect animal tissue.
SCTIMST had entered into an agreement with the MPI in May 2018 for the supply of disease-free animal tissue to the institute for developing biomedical devices.
