Surat: The Surat crime branch on Monday arrested a gang of 11 for allegedly duping businessmen across the country by offering gold at cheaper rate.
Two of the arrested accused are also named in a Rs 27 lakh cheating case registered in Rander police station on June 12.
Police seized 21 mobile phones worth Rs 31,500, gold bar worth Rs three lakh, rough and polished diamonds worth Rs one lakh, 30 metal pieces in a suitcase, 10 bundles of paper pieces cut in size of currency notes and Rs 1.41 lakh cash. Investigation revealed that the gang used to identify businessman who dealt in gold bar from trading websites. After collecting details, they contacted the victims over phone and called them to the city or Mumbai.
They met the victims in public places to discuss deal and offered Rs three lakh discount per kilo gold.
Once the businessmen were convinced, they provided one real gold bar of 100 grams to them for testing. They kept the victims engaged in discussion while some of them escaped with the cash.
