To be reinstalled in September once flyover is completed

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) over the weekend demolished the skywalk across the Western Express Highway at Bandra to facilitate the construction of a new flyover connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The authorities demolished the south-bound arm of the skywalk between 11 p.m. on Saturday and 5 a.m. on Sunday. The north-bound arm of the skywalk was scheduled to be pulled down around the same time on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

“Traffic movement was regularised immediately after the south-bound arm of the skywalk was pulled down. The traffic police have been given charge to maintain proper commute during those hours and also look over the overall safety,” joint project director (PR), Dilip Kawathkar said.

The Bandra skywalk is being demolished to ensure an easy commute for vehicles from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to BKC. The 714-m arm of the flyover which will land at BKC will help motorists avoid the time-consuming wait at the Kala Nagar signal.

“The flyover is based on a study that MMRDA had conducted a few years ago. It intends to decongest the traffic at the Kala Nagar junction,” Mr. Kawathkar said.

The skywalk will be erected again in September, once the construction of the flyover is completed.
