‘CCP was intimated in advance’

Panaji: The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has said that the wet waste truck of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has not been stopped suddenly but that the CCP was informed several times in the last three months that the Saligao waste treatment plant will not accept the wet waste, as the plant is running at full capacity.

According to the Corporation, the plant was designed to handle waste of 27 panchayats of Bardez and Pernem talukas and the CCP was allowed to transport its wet waste to the plant for a temporary period till it started its own processing unit.

The Saligao plant, run by Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd (HWTPL), is presently processing 140 tonne waste per day and is planning for an expansion of its facility to 300 tonne per day.

The officials in the Corporation said since the plant is authorised to process wet waste coming from only 27 panchayats of Bardez and Pernem, there was no obligation on them to continue accepting CCP’s wet waste.

“We have already stopped accepting wet waste from St Cruz and Taleigao with prior intimation to the panchayat bodies which were not a part of authorised collection panchayats. The CCP officials were communicated verbally and also in writing informing about difficulties in continuing to accept their wet waste. They have been told to develop their own waste processing mechanism,” an official from the Goa Waste Management Corporation said.
