A large number of weavers and residents of Kodiyampalayam presented petitions to the Collector, on Monday, urging him to take steps to create a new panchayat for them by bifurcating Alakarai panchayat.

In the petition, the members of Weavers Women Development Organisation said that about 5,000 people were living in the Kodiyampalayam hamlet, which was part of Alakarai panchayat. Most of them were weavers. But, there was no proper or sufficient basic infrastructure including panchayat office, Village Administrator Office, Primary Health Centre and others. There was no primary school too. The people had to go to neighbouring villages for many purposes. The Kodiyampalayam hamlet had been neglected for long, they added.

V. Vellaiammal, president of the organisation, said that they had been fighting for basic amenities for decades. But, no official or panchayat representative had bothered to listen to their grievances. If a new panchayat was established for Kodiampalayam, they would get all needed infrastructure, they pointed out.
