DU applications drop by 20,000 in 2019; English top choice

NEW DELHI: The total number of applications for admissions to Delhi University has dropped by 20,000 this year to 2.58 lakh, compared with last year’s 2.78 lakh.
The reduction is despite DU extending its registration dates till June 22 midnight on the direction of the Delhi high court.

According to data released by DU on Sunday, more female students have applied this year than males. While 1,29,753 female students have applied for admission, 1,28,634 male students have filled application forms. English has again been the top choice for applicants with almost 1.43 lakh applying for the course.

According to DU, there could be several reasons for the reduction in application numbers. It believes the introduction of a form correction option has helped reduce the number of ‘duplicate forms’. “Earlier, there were instances where an applicant would put wrong information and since there was no editing option, the applicant would submit a new form. With the introduction of a ‘one-time correction option’, we have made sure that applicants get a one-time chance to rectify mistakes,” said OSD (admissions) Sukanto Dutta.
Dutta also said that earlier, students with average marks would apply for DU but as cutoffs have been going very high in recent years, students with average marks are looking elsewhere.
Delay in admission process may be behind drop in applications
GOING TO DU: Number Of Women Applicants Higher Than Men This Time
DU OSD (admissions) Sukanto Dutta said that since CBSE exam results came out early, “there is a possibility that many students may have applied to other universities and institutes before DU began its admission process. There are several institutes even in the Delhi-NCR region that attract students with courses”. JL Gupta, member of the DU executive committee, said, “Many private universities had started their admission process much before us. It becomes difficult for students to apply in DU when they have already paid admission fees elsewhere.”
Giving reasons for the increase in the number of applications by female students, admission committee head Rajiv Gupta said, “In recent years, girls have outperformed boys in board exams and that is the reason why more and more girls are now joining DU for higher education.” He said the highest number of applicants is yet again from Delhi this year (1,11,433) and “it is natural that people who are natives of Delhi will apply in DU, followed by those from nearby states of Haryana and UP”.
With 2,05,434 applications, maximum number of applicants who have cleared the 12th exam is from the CBSE. This is because most schools in Delhi are CBSE affiliated.
According to DU data, English is again the most sought-after course this year with a total of 1,42,970 applications followed by 1,30,240 for political science and 1,25,519 for the BA programme.

“English is a course which any student from any stream can apply to, irrespective of what they had studied in 12th Class. It is also a subject that most students want to take as there is a demand for English proficiency in all fields,” Gupta said.
This year also saw the first-ever admissions under the new EWS category with 9091 applicants applying under it. DU also released data for sports where football is yet again the most popular course with 1,578 applications followed by 1,297 for athletics and 1,223 for basketball. The first cutoff list will come out on June 28.
