NEW BEDFORD -- A Westport resident was killed in a motorcycle crash on Route 18 on Saturday.

It was one of two fatal motorcycle accidents in the area this weekend.

On Saturday around 7 p.m., Andrew Mindyas, 63, of Westport, was traveling "at a high rate of speed" through the intersection of Walnut Street and Route 18 when he struck the curb, entered the center median and struck a large cobblestone planter, according to a press release from the Bristol County District Attorney's office.

When police and rescue personnel arrived on scene, they located the victim and rushed him to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to the release.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The second fatal crash occurred on Sunday around 6:35 a.m. at the intersection of Route 177 and Tickle Road in Westport. Cornelis Blom, 67, of Somerset, was driving his motorcycle when it collided with a pickup truck. He was determined to be deceased on scene by paramedics. No charges had been filed as of Monday morning in that accident.
