PUNE: A 55-year-old labourer was arrested from Solapur for killing his wife and dumping her body in a well, because he could not bear her medical expenses.
The woman’s skeletal remains were found on June 18 in a well in Kesnand village, around 21km from Pune.
The police identified the woman as Shila Raju Sutar (50). Her husband Raju Sutar was taken into custody from Kumbhari village in Solapur district.
A team of Lonikand police led by inspector Dagadu Hake made the arrest.
Hake told TOI that on June 18, the woman’s skeletal remains were found wrapped in a piece of cloth along with a big stone, inside the well located on one Rajendra Jadhav’s farm land in Kesnand village.
“We found some clothes and a ‘mangalsutra’ with the skeleton. We presumed it was a woman’s skeleton and began the probe,” Hake said.
Hake’s team began investigating the case in the nearby areas, looking for a woman who was missing for the last few months.
“During the probe, we got information that a labourer who was staying in Talerandwadi near Kesnand with his wife, had left the village over a year ago,” he said.
The police also got information that the labourer’s wife was critically ill.
“One day he told his neighbours that he was going to drop his wife at their native village in Solapur district. The labourer had left home with his wife at night and returned alone the next morning,” Hake said.
He added that the neighbours suspected how he had returned so early from his native place.
The police then focused on Sutar and started collecting information about him.
“We questioned several people and managed to reach one of Sutar’s relatives who gave us his address,” Hake said.
When the police team found Sutar, he admitted to his involvement in his wife’s murder.
Unable to bear wife’s medical expenses
Shilabai was Sutar’s second wife and was critically ill. She was bed ridden and Sutar was not able to bear her expenses.
To avoid his wife medical costs, Sutar hatched a plot to murder her. “He covered his wife in a piece of cloth along with a big stone, and dumped her in the well,” Hake said.

After the murder, he stayed in the Kesnand area for a week and then left for his native place in Solapur. Shila was Sutar’s second wife. She has a daughter from her previous marriage.
“We will match her daughter’s DNA with the skeletal remains to ascertain the identity,” Hake said.
