Pune: Man dies of swine flu, death toll rises to 44

PUNE: A 54-year-old resident of Pimple Gurav succumbed to swine flu-induced complications last week, taking the number of fatalities in the city to 44 so far this year.
The deceased was suffering from influenza-like illness from April 28. Initially, he had a fever and cough. But his condition deteriorated and he developed severe breathlessness.
The man was undergoing treatment at Ruby Hall Clinic. “The man’s throat swab tested positive for swine flu on June 4. In view of his failing condition, he was put on ventilator support,” said a doctor from the hospital.
“He had underlying medical conditions including diabetes and ischemic heart disease. He succumbed to swine flu-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) on June 17,” the doctor added.
At present, two more patients with swine flu are in critical condition. They have been put on ventilator support at different hospitals in the city. As many as 138 patients have tested positive for the virus in the city so far this year.

Meanwhile. civic centres run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in the city screened about 56 patients with influenza-like illness for swine flu on June 23.
“The centres have screened about 4.49 lakh patients with influenza-like illness so far this year. Of these, about 5,315 patients who were suspected to have contracted the virus were administered oseltamivir tablets, also known as Tamiflu or Fluvir,” said a health official of the civic body.
