The man who killed an East Providence woman on Saturday night, before taking his own life Sunday, was obsessed with her and had been harassing her, authorities said Monday.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office released a summary of its preliminary investigation into the death of Brandi Berg, 37, who was shot to death in the parking lot of the Fashion Crossing Plaza in North Attleboro. Authorities identified the shooter as Steven Fregeolle, 32, of Johnston. Fregeolle was found dead Sunday night in the woods in Charlestown of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the report, Berg's boyfriend told authorities that Berg and Fregeolle had previously worked together at a car dealership in Warwick, and that at one point they had been in a relationship.

The boyfriend said that Fregeolle had recently been displaying "obsessive behavior" toward Berg — texting her frequently and contacting her friends and family members in an attempt to locate her. Several of the messages he categorized as desperate, according to the district attorney's office.

The boyfriend said that just before the shooting, which occurred at 6:17 p.m. Saturday, Berg had texted him that Fregeolle was in the Fashion Crossing parking lot and had confronted her about seeing someone else.

Witnesses said that the suspect fired multiple shots through the windshield of Berg's SUV. An off-duty state trooper and an off-duty Bridgewater, Massachusetts, police officer were in the area and attempted to follow the suspect's blue Subaru as he fled the area. They were able to provide a description of the vehicle, including the license plate number, which showed that the vehicle was registered to Fregeolle.

The Subaru was found at noon on Sunday, abandoned in a parking lot of the Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve in Charlestown. Authorities spent several hours searching the 842 acres of woodland before finding Fregolle's body. Next to the body was a handgun.
