BERHAMPUR: To increase the green cover of Ganjam, the district administration has decided to rope in 5.43 lakh schoolchildren (Class I-X) to plant trees and train them to take care of the planted saplings.
The comprehensive plantation campaign — pila tia, gachha tia (one child, one tree) — was launched on Friday, the day the schools reopened after summer vacation. It will continue till the first week of July. District collector Vijay Amrut Kulange launched the drive in a function held at
Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya, Bauricandapalli, near Khallikote, on Friday.
“Students will get at least one sapling each to plant near his/her house or any other public place. In case a student fails to get a suitable location, he/she will plant the sapling on the respective school premises under the supervision of a headmaster,” said the collector.
He added, “The students will be asked to take care of
the saplings. They will be taught plantation methods like digging pits, application of manure, bio-fertilizers and pesticides and watering, among others.”
Kulange said, “A team of officers constituted by the district administration will evaluate the work after a year. The team will visit the plantation sites and assess the growth and quality of the trees planted by the students.” Students who do a good job would receive certificates of appreciation on a special day, preferably in the week of Van Mahotsav, Kulange added.
All block development officers (BDOs) and block education officers (BEOs) have been engaged as supervising and nodal officers of the campaign. “The saplings, mostly fruit-bearing and shade-loving trees, will be collected by the respective BDOs from the forest,
horticulture and soil conservation departments. They will be distributed among the students,” said district education office (DEO) Sanatan Panda, who is the district nodal officer of the campaign.
Mass schemes such as Parimal Vidyalaya under the Swachh Bharat Mission, which involve students, have achieved success in the district. “We hope this campaign increases the green cover of Ganjam,” Panda added.
The campaign is significant as thousands of trees were uprooted or broken due to cyclones that hit the district, said divisional forest officer,
Berhampur, Ashish Kumar Behera.
