A two-day meeting of the CPI(M) State committee began here on Sunday under the looming shadow cast by the allegations of rape and cheating against party State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son and the suicide of expatriate investor Parayil Sajan at Anthoor in Kannur district.
State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is expected to report to the State committee on the allegations raised by a Mumbai-based woman against his son Binoy Kodiyeri.
A Mumbai court will decide on Binoy’s anticipatory bail plea on Monday. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Oshiwara police, the woman had accused Binoy of having cheated her into a long-term conjugal relationship on the promise of marriage. She claimed she had an eight-year-old son from the affair, which commenced when she worked as a danseuse in a bar hotel in Dubai in 2009.
Denying the allegations, Binoy maintained that the woman was trying to blackmail him.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Mr. Balakrishnan had asserted that neither he nor the party would protect or help his son.
The alleged role of Anthoor municipal chairperson P.K. Syamala in the suicide of Sajan is also likely to come up for discussion at the State committee meeting. Mr. Balakrishnan had given a clean chit to Ms. Syamala and maintained that municipal officials alone were to blame for the red-tapism that had driven Sajan to suicide.
Anti-Emergency day
The State committee meeting on Sunday adopted a resolution to observe June 26 as anti-Emergency day to highlight the threats and challenges posed by the new NDA government at the Centre and mobilise the masses against the authoritarian regime.
A pressnote issued by the committee here on Sunday said the newly elected government led by Narendra Modi was trying to undermine the democratic traditions and federal system in the country and impose an authoritarian system. It called upon party units at the lower levels to organise rallies and public meetings on June 26 to highlight these threats and the need to protect democracy.
