The National Convention for Vitiligo was organised by the Leucoderma Awareness Movement - India in the city on Sunday.
The convention meant to bring awareness on the skin disorder was held at St. Joseph’s College on World Vitiligo Day. About 200 persons affected with vitiligo took part, in addition to students.
A group of 17 doctors discussed vitiligo and its treatment through allopathy, plastic surgery and psychology. The participants interacted with the doctors sharing the travails they faced due to the skin condition in their daily life.
“Most people only wanted to know how to cover it up and how to tell people that it is not a contagious disease,” said K. Umapathy, Secretary, Leucoderma Awareness Movement - India.
The convention came up with three resolutions.
“First, we request the Centre and the State government to declare and create awareness of World Vitiligo Day just like Polio or any other condition. Second, the state boards, CBSE and other education systems must include the real facts of vitiligo in their syllabi. Third, all insurance providers must include treatment for vitiligo in their policies to help those affected with it,” said Mr. Umapathy.
