KALABURAGI: Chief minister
HD Kumaraswamy had to postpone his grama vastavya (village stay) in Heroor (B) village of Afzalpur taluk, Kalaburagi district, following incessant rain on Saturday.
The overnight downpour submerged the shamiana erected for the CM's Janata Darshan programme in the village, which got flooded.
Vehicles of government officers and the public parked in the open field got submerged in rainwater.
Kumaraswamy, who was to leave Chandriki village in Yadgir district - where he spent Friday night - apologised to the people of Heroor (B) for the change of plan and assured them of returning sometime in the first or second week of July.
The district administration had worked overtime to spruce up the village and had laid out a new stretch of road (20km). While the locals were happy about the rains finally arriving, they were disappointed that the CM couldn't spend time with them.
Kalaburagi district in-charge minister Priyank Kharge visited the village and assured the people that the CM would come after the
monsoon. He asked the deputy commissioner and tahsildar to receive the memorandums from the people who had come to meet the CM.
Before visiting the village, Kharge said the social welfare department released Rs 1.5 crore for development works.
Earlier, Kumaraswamy after a nine hour janata darshan on Friday, told reporters that his government was committed to the development of Hyderabad-Karnataka region comprising districts of Bidar, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Raichur, Koppal and Yadgir.
He said the previous government had announced a medical college for Yadgir, but he was not too keen on starting it. "Don't misunderstand me, but starting a medical college won't benefit the students of the region. It requires almost Rs 600 crore to start a medical college which will not help the locals," he added.
Instead, the government has to improve the district hospital in Yadgir, which will be upgraded to a 300-bed facility within a month, he said.
CM takes exception to BJP's comments Kumaraswamy took exception to the BJP calling his village stay programme a lavish affair and an attempt to divert attention from other issues. "Some basic facilities were created for my janata darshan in Chandriki village, including the tiled bathroom," he added.
