Allahabad: Recklessness while driving continues to lead several citizens to untimely deaths as more than 300 persons lost their lives in 680 road accidents reported in Allahabad between January and June 2019, says a recent report by the traffic
police.
In the wake of the alarming figures, traffic police department has mooted a proposal to regularly monitor road safety measures and review the status of black spots in the city.
A black spot is stretch of road which is historically prone to accidents.
Released earlier this week, the report says that currently there 98 black spots in the city.
SP (traffic) Kuldeep Singh said, “Rash and negligent driving leads to most road accidents in the city. Traffic police are reviewing and analysing the data related to fatal and non-fatal accidents and fresh measures would be taken accordingly.”
Singh said that the department would also be monitoring the efficiency of services like ambulances and cranes, apart from urging citizens living in accident-prone areas to help out mishap victims witout any hesitation.
The report also mentions that just 10% car owners were found wearing seat belts during the inspection drives conducted in the six-month period. The number of two-wheeler riders found wearing helmets was slightly higher at 30%.
“Despite the possibility of being written a challan, commuters are least bothered to follow traffic rules,” the SP said.
Police said that apart from rash driving, driving under influence of alcohol and while using a mobile phone also led to a number of road accidents in the city.
