The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has urged the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to extend the time limit by three more months so that stakeholders can make comments or submit suggestions towards the draft National Education Policy (NEP), 2019.
According to a resolution adopted at its central executive committee meeting held here on Saturday, the draft document of the K. Kasturirangan Committee could be discussed in more detail to remove the negative features of the draft and wanted the academic committee across the country to deliberate on all the vital issues and come out with suggestions before any step is taken to enforce the recommendations in the draft.
Another resolution expressed shock over many aided and private colleges collecting huge capitation fee or donations at the time of admission despite the State Government enacting a legislation prohibiting the collection of donations or capitation fee in 1992. The resolution demanded punitive action to be taken against the colleges that deny education to the underprivileged section of society in the name of capitation fee or donations.
Another resolution said that Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education has become defunct without the vice-chairman and the secretary and there is no teacher representative to the council. Hence, AUT wanted necessary steps to be taken to make necessary appointments. Other resolutions urged the State Government not to grant permission for the extension of the service of the principals of aided colleges beyond the superannuation period of 5 years and declaration of Chikkaiah Naicker College as a government college without delay.
