A scammer has conned an elderly man out of hundreds of dollars after selling him four fake leather jackets in a car park in Sydney's northern beaches.

The middle-aged con artist took $800 from the 71-year-old man at the Forestway shopping centre at Frenchs Forest about 12.30pm on Wednesday.

The scammer, who stood next to a black Audi SUV, offered the victim a fake bargain of 'genuine leather jackets'.

Putting on an Italian accent, the conman told the elderly shopper he needed money to return so Italy so he could purchase a phone for his daughter.

He then offered four fake 'genuine leather jackets' for $800, the Manly Daily reported.

The 71-year-old victim immediately withdrew the large sum from a bank before handing the cash to the con artist.

The conman was also seen at Glenrose Shopping Centre at Belrose in the Audi SUV.

The elderly man realised later on the jackets 'weren't what they seemed', according to Northern Beaches police.

Men with Italian accents reportedly sold fake PVC leather jackets made in China in North Sydney, Mosman, Lane Cove and the Sutherland Shire.
