JAIPUR/KOTA: The Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a middleman for taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 for a senior income tax commissioner in Kota on Thursday.
The police said that the arrested middleman admitted to have taken the bribe for Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Amrish Bedi, posted as commissioner of income tax (CIT Appeals) in Kota. “We went to Bedi’s office in Kota but were told that he is currently on leave. We went to his house too but he was not present there, we are searching his Jaipur and Kota residences too,” said ACB SP, Kota, Sudheer Choudhary, adding that the IRS officer is currently on the run, but teams have spread out in Bedi’s search. Even as the ACB has spread dragnet to close in on Bedi, this is a second such incident in the state in a year where a senior IRS officer was booked in a corruption case. Earlier in January, sleuths had arrested IRS officer Sahiram Meena posted as narcotics bureau’s Kota additional commissioner for accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh.

The incident also comes close on the heels of the Union government sending senior IRS officials on compulsory retirement for misconduct. “Bedi had demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh through his middleman Virendra Kumar Jain, who is an income tax practitioner (ITP). The bribe was taken on an unnamed cheque,” Choudhary said. He added that the ACB had first received the complaint against Bedi and Jain’s nexus in January this year after they demanded a bribe for ruling in favour of a complainant.
“The complainant, Bharat Kumar Kushwaha, had given us an application alleging that his mother had sold a property recently for which a tax liability of Rs 57 lakh was imposed on him. However, Kushwaha filed an appeal before Bedi. Then Jain stepped in and demanded Rs 2 lakh for giving an undue benefit in favour of Kushwaha,” Choudhary said, adding the first instalment was to be paid on Thursday.
