AMBALA: The district police have booked a Chandigarh resident for allegedly sending a person to the US on someone else's passport. The accused had obtained the passport from the parents of a Class VIII student of DPS, Ambala.
The complainant, Gurkirpal Singh of Topkhana Bazaar in Ambala Cantonment, told cops that the accused had fooled him on the pretext of sending his son to Disneyland and NASA in the US.
The Ambala police have booked the accused, Chetan Sabharwal of Sector 20D, Chandigarh, under Sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
"Sabharwal had organized a camp at my son's school and selected him for a trip to the US. For this, he had demanded Rs 2.3 lakh and his passport. I initially gave him Rs 30,000 as file charges and for the visa. Following this, he sent me a copy of the visa via WhatsApp. The visa was valid for 10 years. However, later, he said that my son will have to wait until December 2016. He kept on delaying and finally in June 2017 told us that my son's passport was stolen from his car. We immediately filed a DDR and applied for a new passport," the complainant said.
"On June 11, 2019, we were in the process of boarding our flight to Berlin, where my elder son lives, however, the immigration department at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, did not let us board the flight. They told us that my son's passport was already in use by someone in the US. The officials of the immigration department demanded the copy of the DDR, which we provided. Meanwhile, I tried to contact Sabharwal, but he did not respond," Gurkirpal said.
"For the last 10 days, I am trying to seek help from departments concerned. My entire family is going through mental stress," he added.

Meanwhile, Ambala DSP Munish Sehgal said it was a rare case as he had not encountered anything like this before.
"Such type of fraud has not come to my notice in Ambala and this could be one of the rare cases. As per my experience, such frauds exist. We will verify all facts and investigate the case accordingly," he said.
