Nissan Grants Renault Multiple Boardroom Seats To Ease Tensions

Renault bosses have been granted seats on key committees on Nissan’s board in a move that’s meant to put an end to past tensions that have affected the two carmakers in recent months.

In a statement released today, Nissan said that it will allow Renault CEO Thierry Bollore to sit on its board’s audit committee, while Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard will hold a seat on the nomination committee, both being key positions.

However, Bollore ending up on the audit committee did not happen without strings being attached, as Nissan placed restrictions on the French execs role in areas where the two companies might encounter conflicts of interest, reports Autonews Europe.

“The agreement reached on Renault’s presence in Nissan’s new governance confirms the spirit of dialogue and mutual respect that exists within the alliance,” said the French automaker in a statement.

Reaching this agreement can be viewed as compensation for Renault having approved Nissan’s overhauled governance structure. The former now expects the proposal to be submitted for approval at the board of directors meeting, following a shareholders meeting on June 25.

The partnership between Renault and Nissan has been fractured ever since Carlos Ghosn was arrested and imprisoned for financial misconduct last year. Despite these serious tensions, both sides agreed that for the Alliance to function properly, they would have to find ways to patch things up.

One such way is to move forward with common projects, such as the recently unveiled partnership with Waymo on autonomous tech.
