Nagpur: The month of Ramzan is not just to celebrate one's happiness. It serves a purpose of understanding our responsibility towards other people and to assess ourselves, said member of Muslim Personal Law Board, Abdul Wahab Parekh, on Wednesday.
He presided over the function ‘Daawat-e-sheer khurma’ organized by Wahadat-e-Islami Hind Nagpur at Ahbab Community Hall, Anant Nagar. Retired geologist at Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) SK Gupta was the chief guest.
Parekh added, "It is our moral duty to understand our neighbours, their culture and identity. We all need to build a bond that cements our society together and work for peace alongside all people of goodwill. We follow the orders of the creator of this universe during the month of Ramzan. If one follows these rules for the remaining 11 months too, they are ought to lead a peaceful afterlife."
In his opening remark, Member of Wahadat-e-Islam, Mohammad Irshad, shed light on the history of Ramzan. He said, "This festival was initiated in Medina after the migration of prophet Muhammad from Mecca. People are aware of Ramzan as the month when we undergo a period of fasting. Through this festival, Islam teaches the communal aspects of the fast like empathy for the underprivileged. One understands the graveness of hunger and thirst."
Elaborating on the significance of organizing the programme, Irshad said, "The objective of this Daawat is to interact with people of all communities and share the sweet dessert with everyone in order to untangle the knot which has been formed among people."
Speaking at the celebration, Gupta said, "Humanity is our ultimate religion. Gradually, we are losing our touch with humanity and we need to evaluate ourselves ."
Abdul Wahab Malak conducted the programme. The traditional dessert, sheer khurma, was distributed among everyone.
He said, "The crime rate is at all-time high with the increase in number of cases of rape, murder, etc. The only way to stop this is to awaken the essence of god watching over us throughout our good and bad deeds. This message is propagated through the month of Ramzan."
Mohammed Irshad recited a verse 'Surah Rahman' from the Quran.
